Removing Duplicate Lines From SEO Keyword Lists
Keyword research produces duplicates constantly. The same keyword appears in a Semrush export, a Search Console report, and a competitor gap analysis. Importing that merged list into a rank tracker without cleaning it wastes tracked-keyword slots and skews content planning.
Where duplicates come from
- Multiple sources: the same keyword in two or more exports.
- Case and spacing: "Remove duplicate lines" vs "remove duplicate lines " — identical intent, different strings.
- Plurals and variants: note that "tool" and "tools" are different lines. Dedupe tools only remove exact matches, so variants survive — which is usually what you want for keyword work.
A clean workflow
- Export keywords from each source and paste them into one list.
- Open the Remove Duplicate Lines tool and paste the combined list.
- Enable Ignore case and Trim whitespace so "SEO Tools", "seo tools", and "seo tools " collapse into one line.
- Enable Show removed duplicates to audit what was dropped before you trust the result.
- Copy the clean list into your tracker, content brief, or clustering sheet.
Tips
- Keep the original order (first occurrence) when the list is already prioritized by volume or difficulty.
- Use sort A–Z only when you want a canonical list for comparison across exports.
- Dedupe before clustering: duplicate keywords create duplicate clusters and double-counted search volume.
